Tag editing? [Jul. 3rd, 2007|06:12 pm]

I'm trying to find a client that would help with editing/re-adding very old tags in a community -- they're glitched, and aren't showing up on the actual tag pages. I was directed here from livejournal support, but I have no idea if this is where I should be. (:

Thanks for your time!

This is probably where you should be. I ran over to support on a hunch to take a look and see if I could find your request, and it looks like you have the problem I thought you had. Like your volunteer said, you could start at the first entry in the community by finding the first entry on LJ, looking at the tags on that entry and editing them if necessary, then going on to the next entry ... but that would take a whole lot of time. Using a client to do the editing will cut down on the time spent loading the entry, editing the tags, and finding the next entry.

Everybody has their own favorite clients. I prefer Semagic, though its editing interface isn't the best; you have to do some clicking around before you get to the tags.

Someone else here may have a more productive suggestion about a client that handles tags and tag editing faster and better.

You might also want to look through the list of clients here (linked off the profile here and probably a few other places) and see if you can find one that works with your operating system that does the things you need it to do. I'm not sure how friendly all of them are to locate and install. I remember LogJam with fondness as well; I'm trying to remember why I stopped using it.

Thank you very much! I'm checking out Semagic now, and I'll definitely check out a few from that client list.

For Semagic, the way you're going to be using it, you probably want to set the settings so you're editing in the main window (less clicking) and so you don't switch back to your main journal after finishing up with whatever (less switching back and forth). I've posted a few things intended for my journal to a comm with Semagic, but on the whole I've been satisfied.

Ah. It won't let me edit the tags because I didn't make the original post. Do you know of any way to make it let me edit them, or another program I could use?

Eeek. So you can edit the tags on LJ, but not with that client, because the client's trying to edit the whole post. I understand what's going on here. I don't know of a client offhand that will solely edit tags, and I think this is a critical refinement of the standard Support "try using a client to edit tags" knowledge point -- that it may not work as advertised in communities unless the client has a setting for editing tags only. (I also volunteer in Support from time to time.)

Now I'm going through my brain trying to think of who I know who could develop a retagging-specific client, because (in my eyes) it's something that needs doing.

I know since the 1000-entry new tag limit came up, there's been a demand for an LJ-side re-tagging tool. I don't know if that's something that is technically feasible from LJ's side of things (it would be a huge load on the system on a level with the new mass security change tool), but now it looks like it's something that the current clients don't cover. Hm.

(Sorry. You just got my brain doing things, and I think I have an idea of people who are both bored enough, LJ-geek enough, and code-geek enough to think about poking. I may well get back here on this.)

Any response is better than no response at all -- I could have gotten your brain doing things and you could have just dropped any contact. ♥

Thank you so much for your input. I'll still look around for something I can use, and I'll definitely keep your comments in mind.

If you do get a retagging-specific client, I would adore you forever -- there are nearing 5,000 different tags, and almost forty that are in need of archive work.

I know if anything like that happens, it'll probably hit lj_nifty in short order. One of my friends wrote a script for re-tagging her own journal, but I don't think it's suitable for comms. Alas.

It's fine. (:

No, never found anything out. I've got... a lot more to do with the tags than just that (the 5,000 are almost down to 4,000, at the moment), so I've shoved that issue to the backburner. Sorry..

If you do find anything out, could you let me know?

not yet, still searching. I can't even find where I can put in the tags in Semagic to edit my copied journals on IJ and GJ. *grumbles*
