Given a user name, I need a way to determine if the user exists and is a normal user, not a community or a feed. I could request and parse the userinfo page, but I want to minimize the load on the server.

Parse the foaf file for a user (bots page). If the user is a community, the top level element will be foaf:Group. If the user is a person, it'll be a foaf:Person element. If the user is a syndicated feed, the foaf document will 404.
