This is a pretty big update, although most of the changes are under the hood.

For those of you who emailed me with errors you encountered in the previous version, they should be resolved in this version. The main issue was with clone servers and free accounts, and ljArchive now supports both properly.

The main interface has been completely redone. Here are some screens:ljArchive is now ready to be ported to linux - implemented in mono. I've looked over the mono BCL and ljArchive's core library is completely compatible. I'm looking for a mono developer familiar with gtk# (or wt# or whatever else) to work with me. The ljArchive core library is VERY easy to work with and fully (sorta) documented. Here's an example of the code you'd write to interact with it. So if you're interested, please email me or leave a comment.

I'm also looking for speakers of other languages willing to help me translate some bits of very mundane text such as "ljArchive encountered an error" because ljArchive now supports localization.

Unfortunately for upgrading users, this version breaks compatibility with the old file format, so you'll have to create a new archive and resync. I won't be making a habit of breaking compatibility.

There are lots of new features. For a more thorough listing of them, check out the revision history.

You can download the new client here.

Wow! You have outdone yourself! The new ljArchive downloaded and catalogued 2042 entries and 8955 comments in very short order and presented them all beautifully! Very amazing stuff. Thank you so much. Many of my friends were so delighted with the former version, they are going to really get jazzed about this one. Off to tell 'em!

in ljArchive, open your journal and open the HTML settings pane. pick the "component" template then type in the following:

CommentBackgroundColor: 132, 181, 210
CommentTextColor: 35, 47, 109
EntryBackgroundColor: 221, 238, 204
EntryFooterBackgroundColor: 200, 227, 255
EntryFooterTextColor: 35, 37, 109
EntryHeaderBackgroundColor: 183, 219, 147
EntryHeaderTextColor: 35, 47, 109
EntryTextColor: 35, 47, 109
(skip down a few)
PageAlternateBackgroundColor: 139, 196, 255
PageBackgroundColor: 0, 54, 104

and you should see something familiar!

How wonderful of you to dig all those color codes out for me! It looks wonderfully familiar!

I also had zero problems installing it on my home computer as well as my work computer (I did run basic (control panel) uninstall of the former version first.

I love this one. And, clearly I do not comment enough. My friends are way ahead of me.

Thank you again for all your hard work.

Language help

Heh I don't guarantee that I will be 100% accurate all the time, but I learned to speak, read, and write in French as I grew up (Parents were from Belgium) And I have a pretty good working knowledge of Spanish Learned in School... If you give me a file with The English texts you want translated and some sort of time frame, Id be willing to help... let me know... Am very busy at times but depending on how much you have it shouldn't take too long...

Re: Language help

hi fbartho,

i uploaded the strings xml here. be careful browsing that page in IE - it will autoformat.

anything in a <value> represents the actual text in need of translation. most value tags only have a word or two.

if you see a {0} or {1}, that servers as a "blank". so My name is {0}, and I like {1} would translate to Je m'appelle {0}, et j'aime {1}, I think :)

and thank you!

Re: Language help

Ok, wtf... Today I recieved a "new e-mail" but it was buried pages back... because I have them sorted by sent date... and it was livejournal's notification that I had a new reply to my comment... yours... heh... if you still want I'll look at the language strings... actually I am doing that so if you don't need it... let me know...

Re: Language help

btw, you may want to tell me how you want the text letter shortcuts to be set... because the words have different letters I have to move the ampersands around, and that means that I may cause keyboard menu access collisions of some kind... you'll have to check...

Re: Language help

further update/question... I have to use accented characters, but it seems that I need to double escape them... ie: É which becomes É because single & throws errors

I am not 100% certain how this will react when it goes into your code... add to this, I happen to have an accented character as the first letter in a menu item, and I am getting the idea, to use the keyboard shortcut people would have to type either ampersand, or that actual accented character...(the xml would look like &Émoreletters when what I want in the final rendering is Émoreletters) what are your thoughts on this?... should I just skip the accented keyboard shortcut, change words? change letters?

Re: Language help

The way you've done it is fine - I can parse those into unicode characters when I pull the file in.

Re: Language help

Ok, I have I believe translated the strings into french, you can get that from http://other.digitalsneeze.com/xmlstrings/ as it seems that my site hosters are taking their time to add that subdomain, the files can also be accessed at http://www.digitalsneeze.com/xmlstrings/

I think it should work, if you could let me know if the special characters make it through...

I currently used "article" as the french equivalent for the word entry, but neither entrées nor article seemed quite right there, so if i think of something better, I'll let you know, or you can choose one and do find and replace...

As I mentioned you should check for the correct positioning of the ampersand for the keyboard controls, and you should check for the interaction of that and special characters...

For now I only have french, spanish will take me a good deal longer... let me know what you want me to do...

Re: Language help

WOW, this is perfect. Thank you!

I can convert the special characters to the right unicode encoding when I pull this in, and I'll check the key accelerators. But it looks great.

I understand if you don't have time to do the Spanish one because it will take longer, but if you find yourself bored one evening, by all means have a crack at it :)

Your French strings will be in the next version, and I think it's time to create a contributers page :)

:)

Sounds Good :), its a pleasure to have been of service... most of the projects I have worked on have been for my own use, but I've always thought that I should find some way to be on the developping end... I am taking some more programming classes this coming semester at uni, and I have no doubt that I will find myself in a much better position to hely on the code side of things later on... As of now my coding has serious battles with the rest of my time needs... something i hope will be easier to manage in the future... As for the Spanish, I do hope to be able to do it... but if i get around to it, it will probably be in the next 2 weeks, or sometime a month or more from now... heh crazy sched with this end of month preparing and packing for college, and building a loft... and then there is the actual return and first few weeks back at school...... if you would please elaborate on the unicode, I can already have that in the set next time, spanish uses special chars less often than french...

Re: :)

you can actually type the character directly into the file. for example, é is just Alt+0233 on your keyboard. That works fine in XML.

I put your strings into the latest version and it works great! I posted the announcement to lj_clients and it should be up soon, but a new version is available on the web site.

And regarding your comment, I can certainly understand the predicament of not having enough time! Thanks for your help.

I like exporting to MIDI, really funny! :) There is something strange with comments in Russian. Sometimes they are OK and sometimes displayed as "????".

hi alex,

i'm surprised that it works sometimes and not others. it would make more sense if it worked all the time or none of the time :)

is the entire comment block displayed with "????", or just portions?

C# and .NET, in general, should be non-culture specific because they are built on UTF8/XML right down to the specs. and ljArchive essentially copies byte-for-byte the UTF8 stream it receives from livejournal servers.

in theory :)

in practice, there are some issues that arise that i'm only just beginning to play with.

the winforms version of ljArchive uses IE. the linux version could likely render using mozilla, maybe with something like gtkmozilla.

Is there a way to change more settings on the styles? I hate the wide side margins...

and more s2 styles would be nice.

go into the program folder for ljArchive and look in the templates folder. you can change anything you want there, such as the side margins.

you can also make your own templates (take a look at the 'simple' template for a basic example) that reflect the s2 styles you want in ljArchive.

and THEN you can mail me the templates you've made so I can include them in the project :)

the other suggestions are very good - thanks. the next version is going to focus on some hardcore plugins for doing some pretty serious textual analysis, but i'll probably have time to throw in a UI improvement or two.

Ok I'm getting an error - I had 0.9.2 installed and then installed 0.9.3 on top of it and then ran it and got

ljArchive Error: ljArchive encountered the following fatal error: One or more of the types in the assembly unable to load.

Then I uninstalled completely (using XP uninstall) and reinstalled 0.9.3 and tried it again and got the same error.

Any ideas?

hi pookfreak,

the installer for ljArchive doesn't do a very good job of updating yet, without completely uninstalling the previous version.

to fix your problem, uninstall ljArchive,

then find the directory for it in your program files (it will still be there even though you uninstalled it), and delete the whole directory.

then reinstall.

then let me know if it worked :)

Wow, this is great : ) I was worried when the older version didn't work for me, but this one works like a charm.

Do you think in the future you might add a feature where you can also ahve user pictures for commentors, or maybe have all of the users profile info somewhere?

Even if not, this program is by far the best I've found, thanks much!

hi halimeade,

the livejournal server code doesn't support exporting comment icons yet. i've suggested it to the dev folks, and i think it will eventually happen. when it does, ljArchive will support comment icons.

i'm glad you like the program!
