LiveJournal Client Discussions

i made an "official" offer to sema to see if he wanted to merge efforts and work collectively on the client with myself and maybe a few others.. working out of cvs.

he refused the offer though, stating that he wanted to make the decisions in regards to the client, on his own. so, he wont be joining the team. i am still entertaining the idea of collaborating on the project though, with others. sema's source would be probably be integrated, although not in entirety actually.

obvious benefits would be that the client would have its spell checker back and there would be an official distribution again. no real drawbacks that i can think of... more brains are always a good thing. it would also be nice to have a concurrent versioning system instead of single lock like sourcesafe.

anyway, anyone interested, and adequately skilled enough to join the project?

I would definitely be interested in joining the project. There are a lot of little things I'd love to add to the client. It's been a few years since I touched mfc (I mostly write backend C++ COM objects) but, I looked at the source and I can certainly work with that.

sounds like a plan. are you currently working from .net beta's or are you still on vs6?

Re:

well, i was thinking about using .net since its compiler is a lot better, but it is still "beta"... so... its a hard call. i have .net installed but could run vs6 instead. either way, we would have to be synchronized on our dev platforms so that we dont run into issues with projects or workspaces.

Re:

I'd stick with vs6 for now. The .net stuff will probably require us to ship a bunch of new libs with the app...

yeah, it does.. but the libs actually end up being about the same size as the distro for 1.4.6

i've actually compiled it under .net already and packaged 1.4.7 with a few changes. i didnt migrate in any of sema's changes to 1.4.6 yet though.

i still have to talk to brad about a cvs branch for it or something.

Re:

Well I suppose I could install it if you'd like to develop with that. Either way is fine with me.

LiveJournal has no actively maintained official Win32 client.
You abandoned your role as the maintainer in a fit of juvenile hysteria about half a year ago.
If you are willing to work on your code again, fine, but in my opinion the client you'll continue developing should not enjoy the status of the "official" LiveJournal client. This status should either go to the currently best maintained and featured client - Sema's - or, alternatively, there should be no official client endorsed by LiveJournal and users should be free to choose whatever client they want without LJ's endorsement.

are you speaking for livejournal or yourself? be careful what you say.. you are an employee now.

also, last time i talked to brad he still seemed interested in having the "official" client updated. you should check with your boss.

also, as a paying customer and contributor to the livejournal project, i do not appreciate your slanderous remarks towards me. this is not a private journal, this is a livejournal sponsored and run section and as a livejournal employee, you should act professionally (both towards me and in general). your salary was contributed to by me and all the other paid members. you are no longer just a user, especially when you make comments on livejournal specific topics.

not when you are stating things about livejournals policy or decisions that are left to management. you are an employee of livejournal, you cannot speak of livejournal matters or decisions without speaking as the employee that you are.

Why do you keep quoting "livejournal this" and "livejournal that"? avva is as entitled to his own opinion as anyone is... LJ employee or not.

You publically announced that you we no longer going to work on the official LJ client. sema took up the baton with the source code and has produced some damn fine results with it. I don't think it's now fair to take his source code and try and better it after you gave up on it.

As far as being "professional" is concerned, I don't really think that you're in a position to question anyones professional conduct.

You may think I'm speaking out of turn here, but as you said, this is a public journal and "as a paying customer and contributor to the livejournal project" I believe I have a right to express my opinion in this matter.

note that brad has 2 journals, one for livejournal matters and one for personal matters. he never posts about livejournal matters with his personal journal. the reason is that they are 2 seperate entities. bradfitz is the employee... the other does not touch lj matters.

what i publically announced was that i was no longer going to maintain the official distribution. in regards to "taking" sema's source, i have EVERY right to that. I am an author of the code that he based his client off of. I never gave up on the code, I gave up on the bullshit that was being dealt my way by others.

i don't have to be professional in any manner here, i am not paid by livejournal nor am i even doing anything "official" for livejournal. i am speaking as an individual and always will be unless i become employed by livejournal (which will never happen). you have never seen me in a professional atmosphere nor will you ever, so do not even begin to question my "professionalism" it is not even an issue here.

as for speaking out of turn, that is not the case. you are welcome to your viewpoints and welcome to state them. you are not a livejournal employee, avva is.

So, you're saying that as avva is an LJ employee, that he's not entitled to his own opinion??

Yeah, but in his post he explicitly said "In my opinion", which makes the situation pretty clear...

In the grand scheme of things, I personally don't give a shit what people do with their clients, nor do I care about all the histrionics that seem to go on between members of the LJ staff and visions... Both sets of people seem to have acted like asses in the past, so why don't you all start ignoring each other.

I use the client (or clients) that I want to use.

End of story.

and btw, i am a co-author.. livejournal cant just cut me out of the loop in regards to the project. as for whether or not it is official, none of my builds of 1.4.7 were "official" yet it is still very much touted as such.
