Is checkfriends ever going to be re-enabled for free accounts? I mean, it got "temporarily" turned off around the start of 2003 due to resource issues, but they must have been solved by now already. I'd like to add it to my client, but can't justify spending forever trying to integrate it properly if only 5% or whatever users will ever see it.

In addition to the points already made, experienced users (ie, those who use clients) are more likely to be paid users. You can't trust the numbers because there are literally millions of accounts that have never even been used.

It is not something we have considered. I don't know if it's feasible or not. It is a rather big hit, the logic to check all your friends is something that we try to avoid as much as possible.

Short answer: no, it probably won't. Not in the forseeable future.

You could enable it for free users, but make the delay longer. I.e. paid users check every 2min, free every 5min or so.

I thought it was originally disabled for free users as one of the more popular LJ cients ignored the rules, and hammered the servers.
