How can a client tell if a journal entry has been deleted?

I read somewhere that the entry would be updated with an empty body, but this doesn't seem to be the case. As a test, I deleted a dummy journal entry, but syncitems still reported 0 updated items.

i don't think that's possible. updating an entry with an empty body is what deletes the entry, afaik. once it's gone, you can't tell it was ever there.

You can't tell, but you can guess from the itemid - if you divide the itemid by 256 and discard the remainder, the result should be a series of numbers that start from 0 (or 1, I don't remember) and increase by 1 with every post. Any "holes" in this series will (presumably, I don't know of anything else that would cause it) be deleted posts.
