Hidejournal friends only... [Nov. 30th, 2006|11:22 am]

Hiyah!

I compiled the rather funky HideJournal into a native exe for windows. ( http://rdc.untamed.co.uk/HideJournal/hidejournal.htm )

The program wasn't written by me, and was written before LJ started using tags. So now when it's converting everything to friends-only it's stripping out the tags of peoples posts.
I want to attempt to add the bits of code in to it to retain all the tags. The problem was, I visited http://www.livejournal.com/developer/protocol.bml to find out how to use the protocol interface, and was then pointed towards http://www.livejournal.com/developer/modelist.bml for the details.

Um, there are no details!

Could someone nice please point me towards documentation for loading, editing and saving posts, which is updated to include tags?

Thanks!

(Please give it a digg or two)

EDIT!:
I read this communities information, and found a link : ttp://www.livejournal.com/doc/server/ljp.csp.protocol.html yay!... now to work on the Tag code... I wish they weren't variable lenths.

Send prop_taglist as a property, and the value is the tags, separated by commas. You get it the same way you get other post properties.

Ah! Thank you!
I just edited it after I found the link with all the details : http://www.livejournal.com/doc/server/ljp.csp.protocol.html

I'm reading through the Java code, so I need to read how the original code got the other post properties first. =) (I've asked permission)

props_prop_someprop!

So I spose you should be looking for props_prop_taglist. Blah, I'm confusing myself. Just look at how they get music and whatever, and copy that and replace where it says prop_music. Oh, does HideJournal do current location too? That's props_prop_location.

I don't think it does - thanks for pointing it out.

Hmm... We have the same thoughts on religion.
People should only be taught about religion from when they are 18... stops the remote risk of brainwashing. =)

You were right the first time — it’s just prop_someprop. Unless I’m misunderstanding you :)

Right. Unfortunately, Hidejournal will have to send the full property list due to that issue with tags for now.

Right now, personally, using the flat interface, I don't even bother parsing the property string. I just store and send the whole string that LJ gives me.

No, there isn't... When I get a post, I just collect every single property you get back. I concatenate them in one giant string containing all "prop_name=value" items. I send this back later when I do a postevent. Yeah, the way I worded how I do this is strange.

Didn't know that you could send the tags only, though. That's helpful to know.

Can you look at my next post?

I'm learning how the program works, so I keep tweaking and running it - but the LJ servers don't like that!

There's not even a command to logout - to close a session!

I'll do this if you still need things figured out, but it looks like you were able to get it working. :)

How do you get that hidejournal thing to work at all? I have java but it doen't do anything for me. It says hiding entries but nothing else. I loaded an older version and it worked for like 10 entries and then never worked again. *sigh* If you have an answer....PLASE let me know. I have been searching for a way to make my entries to friends only without having to go back YEARS and do it all one by one. Thanks!

I haven't changed the program so it could be two things :

1 : LJ servers are replying slower - in which case leave the program to run for at least half an hour. Maybe let it run over lunch?

2 : The LJ system has been changed, and the program has stopped working. =( - in which case I'll have to get around to look at it after I've finished some contract work off.

Good luck for now!

thank you anyway, I tried leaving it on all night and day one time lol. I have been doing them one at a time all day...it sucks but once it's done I will know to KEEP them friends only from now on. What sucks is I have to start from 2001 :(

Sorry it's not worked...

But thanks for letting me know, I'll have to see if I can fix it when I get time. =(

Well it was a GREAT program that a lot of my friend's told me about and it worked for them, so maybe it only works on some journals? I did have a lot of entries and all...plus I did have some tags and weird html that it sould have gotten stuck on. Who knows! It is 100% friends only now though, thank you for your time! :) And how awesome of you to even come up with something like that! ?

It's not mine!
I adopted the code off the original author, and tweaked it to retain peoples LJ tags... and clear up some rare errors.

"Well it was a GREAT program that a lot of my friend's told me about and it worked for them"
They did? Ace!
I tried HJ on one of the small test accounts I use for finding bugs, and it worked, so I think you're right about it being something to do with your account confusing it. Maybe some special keyboard letters?

It's really hard to bug-fix in these situations, I'd have to personally know someone with a problem, so they can log me in, and I can see what the programs up to... people are reluctant to give you their username and passwords just to bugfix!

"plus I did have some tags and weird html that it sould have gotten stuck on"
Ah...... tags? html?
I don't want to hound you, but can you give me an idea of what they are (for the reasons above?)

"And how awesome of you to even come up with something like that! ?"
Well, although I didn't write it, I'll try and improve it more so it gives meaningful errors, rather than frerezes, and works for tricky HTML and tags....

Thanks for getting back to me.

Oh sorry about that, I thought you made it. The html error were just my not knowing what I was doing years ago. Like when you go to but the <a href=" yayayaya and forget the > part and what not. :P I remember reading about it saying it would strip your tags, and I had a lot of tags so I thought maybe that was the problem as well. Who knows what it was. All and all I still think it was a great idea and I am glad it was useful for some people....but I only wish it could work for everyone. I am sure it will one day! :D
