LiveJournal for LambdaMOO server? [Mar. 1st, 2002|06:28 am]
LiveJournal Client Discussions

Has anyone written, or tried to write, a LJ client implementation for LambdaMOO servers? If not, I plan to, but I'd like to know if anyone's thought of it or tried to implement it yet.

It might have an audience of one, that being Yrs Trly on the MOO that I'm a wizard on, but it would be fun to develop and useful for me, at least. I'm not sure if it quite qualifies as a 'client', as ordinary MOO users wouldn't be able to install it -- it would need to be installed by a MOO administrator, though anyone could use it. And not many people use MOO anymore. But it would be an interesting challenge to code.

what kind of functionality did you have in mind? What could uses do that'd be useful or interesting? Sounds like a new twist on an old idea though, and I'm interested.

The chief use I had in mind was the checkfriends ability, because most of my geekfriends use MOO as a more sedate version of IRC to keep in touch with each other throughout the day. It'd be very nice to have a MOO notification of people on my friends list posting.

Our MOO is fairly web-integrated, so implementation should be fairly trivial. (Famous last words.) I'd like to have the ability to make posts at the very least, as I really like the MOO editor interface.

I don't envision adding the more esoteric aspects of the protocol such as adding friends and the like, but at the very least I'd like to implement custom security.

Basically, anything that keeps me from having to flip out of the terminal window is a plus. :)

Holy cow. (No pun inten...screw it, that was intentional.)

Anyway, that sounds like an interesting idea. I've considered writing a MUX/MUSH interface at one point. It would use a player character (or @robot) that it could login as and serve itself out to the populous. Making it integrated with the server itself is more of a challenge but definitely sounds like more fun. :)

Good luck with that!

I was thinking a combination of a kid of $generic_editor and a kid of $feature, actually -- the feature for the checkfriends and player interfaces, and the editor for composing posts. I hadn't thought of using a bot to do it, but the bot implementation we have on our MOO is ... less than stellar.

I'll be sure to post here with progress and eventual code, in case people are interested, and if you decide to do a MUX/MUSH version, I'll host it with the information on my MOO version.
