okay, curiosity (and the need to know) has gotten the better of me...how do we tell the server what the client name/version is? To be more specific, is there a specific mode and or string I should be sending with my request?

The login mode of the LJ Client Protocol tells you all you need to know about sending client version information.

wow, do I feel stupid...I have all of the modes saved to my desktop and i completely missed that one! damn! Oh, btw, can I use clientversion with the postevent mode?

No, I believe that is only on the login mode.
However, once a user has logged in using your client, all future entries for that user will be marked against that client on the LiveJournal Stats page unless they log into another client in the meantime.
