I'm not working on a full client, just some python scripts for archiving that interact with the web interface. However, I think this is a good place for my question:

Is there a way for a user to get a list of itemids for all their entries? I can parse them out of the monthly archives or the "recent entries" page, but that can be a pain to assemble for large and long-lived journals. It would be nice if I could get them with an http request.

If there is a another community or a documentation site where such questions would be more appropriate, please let me know.

Use
http://www.livejournal.com/developer/modeinfo.bml?syncitems
and the syncitems mode of getevents.

If you retreive entries by itemid it's too hard on the servers.

see that other comment, and if you want, you can take a look at my client. it currently has a syncitems implimentation that (appears) to work (and follow protocol).

You may wish to take a look at my perl script that archives all entries for a given user
